Cast of characters

  • Kipper, the title character of the TV show and books. He is warm-hearted, friendly and curious. Kipper is not at all selfish, though, he is known to be a hoarder.
  • Tiger, Kipper's best friend. He is more practical and wise than Kipper. Sometimes Tiger can be very smug and naughty, though he really is a kind dog at heart.
  • Pig, Kipper's other best friend. He likes to eat chocolate cakes and cookies and at times can be misjudging.
  • Arnold, Pig's toddler cousin. Arnold is more aware than Pig and he usually says nothing, but at times he says simple words like "duck" and "igloo". Arnold has many exciting encounters while the older ones are occupied.
  • Jake, a kind and large sheepdog. Jake is sometimes a minor character on Kipper.

IF your children are fans of the Disney Channel, you may be familiar with Kipper, the animated series that has since gone off the air.
The show was based on Mick Inkpen’s books about a puppy and his friends, which include a rather domineering pig, called Pig, and a pedantic dog called Tiger.
Kipper himself is a real sweetie – playful, kind and considerate. The books show him pottering about, playing with his toys (he has a basketful that he sleeps with, an old slipper, a squeaky hippo, a rabbit and an owl), relaxing in his paddling pool and exploring the great outdoors.
Occasionally, Kipper is called upon to babysit Pig’s cousin, Arnold, who is really the cutest little piglet ever. Arnold doesn’t say anything. He just sucks his thumb and looks adorable. He looks like another Mick Inkpen character, the Wibbly Pig.
My favourite Wibbly book is Everyone Hide from Wibbly Pig (Viking Books, 16 pages), in which the chubby piglet hides behind sturdy, baby-friendly flaps.
There is a whole series of Wibbly Pig titles, including Is It Bedtime Wibbly Pig? and Wibbly Pig Likes Bananas, and lots of Kipper books, too.
I like the Kipper Story Collection (Hodder Children’s Books, 112 pages), comprising Kipper; Kipper’s Birthday; Kipper’s Toybox, and Kipper’s Snowy Day and The Little Kipper Collection (Hodder Children’s Books, 80 pages), comprising Honk, Splosh, Arnold and Sandcastle, and The 2nd Little Kipper Collection (Hodder Children’s Books, 96 pages), comprising Hiss!, Butterfly, Miaow! and Swing.
The Little compilations have shorter, simpler stories – ideal for kids between six months and three years old, while Story Collection is suitable for older children, ages three to six.
And check out Inkpen’s Bear in which a bear falls out of the sky into a baby’s playpen! As usual, his illustrations are wonderful!
Mick Inkpen’s books are available at all major bookstores.
