The Incredible Book Eating Boy [RM15]

Also available in Pop-up version- RM 35
and in Hardcover - RM 25

Henry loves books--eating them, that is. The more books he eats, the smarter he becomes, prompting him to devour them at an alarming rate. Henry imagines that if he keeps eating at his current pace, he could eventually become the smartest person on earth. Unfortunately, he starts to get sick from eating so many books, and everything he has learned becomes all jumbled up. Eventually Henry gives up eating books and finds that it can also be satisfying to read them. The text is straightforward and minimal, but Jeffers' illustrations ("created with paint, pencil and Letraset on pages from old books that librarians were getting rid of, the artist found, or people were throwing out") cleverly convey why Henry might find books so enticing. The cover is a pleasing shade of chocolate, and many of the pages look good enough to eat, with print, lines, and texture from the recycled book pages cropping up in unlikely places (see the front cover of this issue). Children will enjoy sinking their teeth into these detail-rich, delectable pictures

There's a Cat in the Library! by Vicki Myron

'The book is not only a tribute to a cat... it's a love letter to libraries.' —Publishers Weekly

'Myron’s beguiling, poignant, and tender tale of survival, loyalty, and love is an unforgettable study in the mysterious and wondrous ways animals, and libraries, enrich humanity.' —Booklist (starred review)

Pet books melt hearts, but with a few exceptions (most conspicuously Marley), they seldom make bestseller lists. That seemed doubly true of cat books, which don't sell as well as their canine equivalents. That all changed though with the entrance of Dewey, Vicki Myron's adorable 2008 adult nonfiction book about a kitten orphan who became a popular public library resident. With this picture book, Dewey prances happily into the children's section, where we're certain that he will be welcomed by a whole new crowd of preschool friends.Pet books melt hearts, but with a few exceptions (most conspicuously Marley), they seldom make bestseller lists.   Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1–The trio from Pumpkin Soup (Farrar, 1999) is back again in another gentle tale of friendship and lessons learned. Once again, the animals are concocting their favorite brew of pumpkin soup when they realize that they've run out of salt. Cat announces that he's going shopping when directionally challenged, but headstrong little Duck insists on accompanying him. Cat relents only after Duck promises to hold on tight to avoid getting lost. A concerned Squirrel decides to bring up the rear on the trip to the city. With his friends on either side, Duck spies a pepper shop and decides that the flavoring would be a delicious addition to their soup. Squirrel begs to differ and he and Cat steam off in the direction of the salt shop, unknowingly leaving their distracted friend behind. Reminiscent of the panic of any youngster left alone in unfamiliar territory, Duck, in a terrible tizzy, becomes even more lost. A true-to-life, predictable resolution ensues although heightened by an overblown response by the police and fire departments. Readers will be reassured by this beguiling rendition of a common childhood experience. The rich coloration and expressive representations of the characters raise this story above the ordinary.

Dog Biscuit by Helen Cooper

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. PreSchool-Grade 1—One day, while Bridget is at Mrs. Blair's house being looked after, she eats a biscuit she finds in the shed—a dog biscuit. Mrs. Blair jokes that she will "go bowwow and turn into a dog," and Bridget begins to believe it. She imagines that she is growing ears and a tail, woofs at the butcher on the way home, gobbles dinner, and acts like a bad doggy during bedtime stories, almost convincing herself that she has changed. Then she dreams of being a canine, partying under the moon with other dogs, and things become too real. She wakes up in the comforting arms of her mother, who confirms that she is still a little girl, and suggests that they "curl up like puppies, just us two," until morning. Next day, they go to see Mrs. Blair, who is sorry for the tease, and they all have tea and "human-being treats" (gingerbread men). The recipe is appended. A handsome and thoughtfully done layout uses different fonts and sizes for the text, and Cooper's illustrations alternate quiet, ordinary scenes with wild scenes of Bridget's imagination-in some, the little girl has an appealing dog's head with distinctive red ribbon bow; in her dream she is a white shaggy pup; and everywhere there are other dogs romping happily against unusually colored pages. This is a beautiful and imaginative book for anyone who loves a good story.—Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA END

Three Cheers for Catherine the Great!

written by Cari Best; illustrations by Giselle Potter
Editorial Reviews:
Synopsis:
Sara's Russian grandmother has requested that there be no presents at her seventy-eighth birthday party so Sara must think of a gift from her heart. An ALA Notable Book. Reprint.

Review:
It's Sara's Russian grandma's birthday, and she has made a proclamation: I have music in my Russian bones, and laughing in my heart. I have the day and the night, and I have all of you. That's why for me the best presents will be no presents. No presents? Sara is baffled.
Her amazing grandma gives so much to everyone. How can they have a birthday party for her without gifts? Sara realizes that any no present for Grandma has to be pretty special. And the no present she finally gives is the best kind of all.
With deep warmth and love, Cari Best captures the sweet bond between grandmother and granddaughter. Set in an urban apartment building, with quirky, friendly neighbors, the story digs around family roots, portraying the trunk, branch, and blossoms of an immigrant family tree. Best's first picture book, Taxi! Taxi!, won the Ezra Jack Keats Award. Giselle Potter's art frequently appears in The New Yorker, and one of the picture books she illustrated, Gabriella's Song, was an ALA Notable Book. Here, her eye-catching watercolors invite young readers to join the neighborhood in celebrating the great Catherine's birthday. Includes a recipe for Russian borscht! (Ages 4 to 8) --Emilie Coulter
